District officials celebrated the completion of a new building at Friendship Ideal Public Charter School located at 6130 North Capitol Street NW in Lamond. The school sits in a cluster of public charter schools near Kansas Avenue, Chillum Place, and North Capitol Street.
From the newsletter of Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George:
This week we cut the ribbon for Friendship Ideal PCS’ beautiful new building in our Lamond community in Ward 4. The new building features a spacious new gymnasium to host school activities and gatherings; modern and expanded classrooms; sustainable features like eco-friendly grounds, bicycle racks, and an electric vehicle charger; and community meeting spaces to serve our broader Ward 4 community. Everyone was thrilled about the new facility, but it was Friendship Ideal’s cheer squad and marching band that stole the show with their energy and talent! Projects like this take years of planning and dedication, so we celebrated the Friendship PCS school leaders, educators, parents, and broader school community that made this vision a reality. As chair of the Facilities and Family Services Committee, I know how important it is for our students to have comfortable and safe learning spaces. I’m excited for all the ways this facility will help our Friendship Ideal Warriors learn and thrive!

On September 22, 2021, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, ANC Commissioner Geoff Bromaghim (4B07) will be holding a community meeting regarding apartments planned for a long-vacant building at 6101 Sligo Mill Road NE in Lamond (zoning case number 05-30D). See discussion of this project in theseposts.
From Commissioner Bromaghim
This large property has been vacant and blighted for the last few years. The developer presented their plans in a community meeting in June. Now that they have submitted an application (click here to see their appl.) to the Zoning Commission, we are convening this meeting without the developer so we can discuss the proposal and gather community input.
New plans to redevelop this property will ultimately require approval from the Zoning Commission. That approval process allows for considerable input from the community.
Please join us! To participate in the meeting by computer or phone, use the log-in info below:

DC Urbanturf has the update on plans for 50 apartments at 6101 Sligo Mill Road NE to complete the development at The Hampshires in Lamond. The developer has submitted an application for a modification of significance of an approved planned unit development (PUD) and related map amendment with the DC Zoning Commission (zoning case number 05-30D). As previously noted, in the original PUD, the building was slated to be renovated for condos. Several years and a couple of ownership changes later, the new owner is now proposing to raze the building and build apartments. The owner states that the layout of the existing building is not conducive to housing and therefore needs to be razed. The units will be a mix of studio, one bedroom, one bedroom plus den, and two bedrooms. Eleven of the units will be rented below market rate to households earning up to 60 percent of median family income. The development team is proposing to provide 50 vehicle parking spaces.
See renderings from the applicant’s Zoning submission here.
A zoning hearing will be scheduled at some point. The project is located in ANC single member district 4B07.

Vacant building at 6101 Sligo Mill Rd. NE in Lamond slated for apartments. Photo taken July 28, 2021.
Super late in getting this post up. DC Urbanturf had the original report regarding apartments planned for a long vacant building at 6101 Sligo Mill Road NE in Lamond. The development team presented at ANC 4B’s meeting on June 28, 2021, and at a community meeting on June 11, 2021.
This building was originally slated to be condos as part of a planned unit development (PUD) called The Hampshires, a community of single family detached homes and townhomes, developed by Comstock several years ago (zoning case number 05-30). There is also an adult care facility operated by Metro Homes on the grounds. For many reasons, development of the larger multifamily building just never got off the ground. Now a new development team is proposing to tear down the building and construct a new building with 50 apartments.
During the ANC 4B meeting in June, the owner stated that one of the reasons development of this building has been so difficult is that the layout of the building is not conducive to housing, and now the building is in no condition to be efficiently renovated. The building will have brick facade to blend in with the homes at the Hampshires and the units will have projected balconies. The team plans to spread surface parking around the site with the goal of having vehicles enter and exit through four different entry points.
Development of this building will be quite a process. The building has changed ownership a couple of times and gone through foreclosure. David Zarnoch, representing the new ownership team (a pension fund), stated that the team is committed to the affordability provisions of the original PUD (11 below market rate units). But in response to a question from the ANC about the status of the original PUD, counsel for the development team stated he had to get clarification from the zoning administrator about whether they would need to modify the original PUD or whether this development would be considered a new PUD. Commissioner Evan Yeats (4B01) worried that if the ANC approved the project, then a precedent would be set to allow a developer to delay building affordable units until years after a project has been approved. Mr. Zarnoch noted that this particular development team is new to the project and that they are not the original owners who allowed the building to fall into disrepair. Also a homeowner in the Hampshires questioned how the development team proposed to provide access to the building from different entry points given that the roads at the Hampshires are private roads, so easements might be needed.
If you live in the area or care about this project, expect to receive notice of community meetings from ANC Commissioner Geoff Bromaghim (4B07) and the Lamond Community Action Group.
