More area bookstores on the horizon

Book lovers, soon enough we will have a few area bookstores to satisfy our book needs. In July, Barnes & Noble opened the Catholic University bookstore in Monroe Street Market. Now the Washington Post brings us news that the forthcoming Brookland and Takoma locations of Busboys and Poets restaurants will also be home to satellite locations of the Politics and Prose bookstore. For readers unfamiliar with P & P’s operation, in addition to carrying a wide selection of titles, the independent bookstore often hosts author discussions and writing classes. P & P will operate bookstores at all of the Busboys locations except the flagship location at 14th & V Street NW, which will continue to be operated by Teaching for Change. The Brookland Busboys and Poets is expected to open next month.

Edit: I neglected to mention Upshur Street Books, which recently opened on November 1 in Petworth (827 Upshur Street NW)

Monroe Street Market Arts Walk

Yesterday, the Art in the Mix Festival celebrated the grand opening of the 27 artist studios that make up the Arts Walk of Monroe Street Market.  A DJ, band, food trucks, live art demonstrations, beer garden, and kids pavilion with face painting made for a festive affair.  While a few of the spaces had been occupied and open for business prior to yesterday’s open house, many artists worked into the wee hours of the morning to have their spaces ready for the big event.  The artists include painters, sculptors, furniture makers, purse designers, photographers, set designers, and poets.  Many of the artists plan to offer community classes.  If you did not have a chance to check them out yesterday, definitely stop by in the future.  Monroe Street Market is located steps from the Brookland-CUA stop on the red line.

Askale Cafe in Brookland

I’ve been to the new Ethiopian restaurant, Askale Cafe, in nearby Brookland (12th Street and Otis Street NE) a few times.  It is quite lovely.  Each time I’ve gotten the Ethio mix (kale, cabbage, yellow and red lentils plus injera) and chai latte.  They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner,  vegetarian and meat options, plus assorted tea and coffee drinks.  Check them out.
