Mestre Curisco is often called the Bruce Lee of capoeira. Mestre Curisco is the supervising mestre of Capoeira Malês DC (Capoeira DC), our neighbors at The Capoeira Spot at 20th and Rhode Island Avenue NE. This Saturday they will celebrate the changing of the cords “Troca De Cordas” of their students at Riggs-LaSalle Recreation Center at 1:00 pm. Free and open to the public.

Capoeira Malês DC joined us for Riggs Park Day in May, so if saw them then, you know the energy they bring. Bring your children. Come yourself.

Today marks the start of Art on 8th, free arts events in nearby Brookland/Edgewood. Events take place on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays during the months of May through September at venues near the Brookland metro station. This week, hear Americana music, learn hand dancing, or indulge in arts and crafts.

Led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke, the NSO collaborates with three Washington artists at Echostage, D.C.’s newest and largest nightlife concert venue. DJ Stylus, dubbed “The Vibe Conductor” by his fans, launches the action with his self-described “party rocking philosophy.” Bach and Pachelbel then meet Christylez Bacon and Wytold. Christylez Bacon, a Grammy®-nominated musician “whose sound lives at the intersection of soul, hip-hop, and jazz” (Washington Post), and Wytold, performer extraordinaire on the electric six-stringed cello, also bring some of their original compositions to the NSO. The all-Mozart program includes the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and Symphony No. 41 (“Jupiter”), plus Principal Flute Aaron Goldman is featured in Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2, with cadenzas by Lera Auerbach, commissioned by the NSO.

 

Art on 8th Summer Festivities

Art on 8th festivities have started for the summer.  Art on 8th is a co-presentation of Dance Place and Monroe Street Market, offering free arts events on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from May to October.  The festivities take place at venues close to the Brookland metro station, just a hop, skip, and a jump from the neighborhood.  Check out the free events for May and the rest of the summer.  Live jazz, a dance jam, and arts & crafts are on tap for this week.

Youth ages 14-23, EARN up to $125 per Day! Words Beats & Life (WBL) is looking for young artists (14-23) to work alongside Lead Artists, gaining professional experience creating murals and contributing to the community through art. Young Artists (14-23) interested in being apprentices must attend a MuralsDC INFORMATIONAL SESSION.  Words Beats & Life (WBL) offers Hip Hop and arts-based educational programming for youth and young adults in DC.
