Design/build team selected for Lamond-Riggs Library reconstruction

From DC Public Library:

The Lamond-Riggs Library, at 5401 South Dakota Ave. NE, is going to be rebuilt. The project is fully funded at $20 million.

The DC Public Library has selected Consigli and HGA as the design/build team for the new Lamond-Riggs Library.

With this team in place, the planning for the new library will begin in October. The design process will take 12 months. Once the design is complete, the current building will be closed and an interim location will provide library service during construction. The new building will open in late 2020.

There will be a community meeting on October 23, 2018, at Lamond-Riggs Library.

  1. What is the viable timeline after construction/renovation is complete that this will get any use as a library by enough people to warrant it?

I feel like it’ll take 5 years, not 1.5, and that once it’s done only older people who are likely to move away in the next 5 years after that will get any use of it and then no one will use it any longer.

What is the primary purpose of libraries nowadays?

  2. Libraries have modernized a lot in the last few years and people of all ages use them, with young adults and parents of minor children being the heaviest users. In 2016, Pew found that 53% of people ages 18-35 visited a library in person in the last 12 months. They offer internet access, workshops, a space for community groups to gather, etc.

Every time I’ve been in our library it has been busy and the small parking lot is always packed.
