Provide Input on Neighborhood Farmstand

We will soon have a farmstand to buy fresh produce in the neighborhood. Please sign up for a focus group being held by UDC’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) on May 12 to provide input on the addition of a farmstand to the Bertie Backus Urban Food Hub located at UDC Backus (on Galloway Street off South Dakota Avenue NE). The focus group will take place at 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Lamond-Riggs Library.

We have mentioned the food hub and its many components on the site a few times – aquaponics garden, hydroponics garden, native plant nursery, community garden, compost cooperative, and a demonstration kitchen (forthcoming). The idea is to create a small-scale urban food system to promote food security.

Now they are looking to add a farmstand at the end of May/beginning of June timeframe. Not a full-fledged farmers market at this point, but something smaller to make sure it is a success and can grow into something larger. UDC CAUSES Dean Sabine O’Hara mentioned this concept at the Lamond-Riggs Citizens Association’s meeting in December 2017. With that in mind, UDC is seeking community input on the best day/time for the farmstand, the types of produce people are interested in buying, and other vendors people would like to patronize.
