April 26: Community Meeting on Improvements to Keene Field

DPR has partnered with the DC Building Industry Association (DCBIA) for a community day to beautify Keene field, located at 5205 Rock Creek Church Road NE. DCBIA selects sites for a volunteer community improvement day every year. There will be a community meeting tonight, April 26, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, at DC Bilingual PCS to solicit community input on what improvements people would like to see to the field. This is not a complete overhaul, but moreso beautification. If you live nearby or use the field, tonight is your chance to let DPR and DCBIA how you use the field and what you would like to see on the field.

Provide Input on Neighborhood Farmstand

We will soon have a farmstand to buy fresh produce in the neighborhood. Please sign up for a focus group being held by UDC’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) on May 12 to provide input on the addition of a farmstand to the Bertie Backus Urban Food Hub located at UDC Backus (on Galloway Street off South Dakota Avenue NE). The focus group will take place at 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Lamond-Riggs Library.

We have mentioned the food hub and its many components on the site a few times – aquaponics garden, hydroponics garden, native plant nursery, community garden, compost cooperative, and a demonstration kitchen (forthcoming). The idea is to create a small-scale urban food system to promote food security.

Now they are looking to add a farmstand at the end of May/beginning of June timeframe. Not a full-fledged farmers market at this point, but something smaller to make sure it is a success and can grow into something larger. UDC CAUSES Dean Sabine O’Hara mentioned this concept at the Lamond-Riggs Citizens Association’s meeting in December 2017. With that in mind, UDC is seeking community input on the best day/time for the farmstand, the types of produce people are interested in buying, and other vendors people would like to patronize. Register at the link.

From the eventbrite link:

The University of the District of Columbia College of Agriculture and Urban Sustainability is planning a farmstand at the Bertie Backus Campus – 5171 South Dakota Ave NE, Washington, DC 20017 for the 2018 spring- fall growing season.

Lamond-Riggs Library Rebuilding Survey

Edit: Link to survey corrected.

DC Public Library released a short initial survey for the Lamond-Riggs Library rebuilding project to begin the community engagement process. Complete it online. The survey asks how individuals currently get to and use the library, what services individuals would like that the current library does not offer, and potential community spaces suitable for offering storytime when the library closes for construction.

If you want to participate in a focus group for the project, email focus.groups@dc.gov or call 202-727-1188 with your name, age, and whether you have children who use the library.
