What is the verdict on Fort Totten Square

Now that the exterior of Fort Totten Square is pretty much done, what do you think? Do you like the purple and gray brick and blue paneling? How about the landscaping?

View from South Dakota and Riggs Road NE

View along 3rd Street. The brick gradually changes from purple to red to complement the residential brick on 2nd and 3rd Street.

View of parking garage on Chillum Place and corner of South Dakota Avenue and Chillum Place. The red brick matches the brick of neighborhood homes. Landscaping screens the garage for residents directly across the street. A few benches line South Dakota Avenue.

  1. The front of the building facing South Dakota Avenue does not fit in with the rest of the neighborhood. The entire building should have been brick as the Walmart one mile away on Georgia Avenue.

  2. I wouldn’t call it beautiful; it has a sort of drab, depressing color scheme, but I am excited about the retail options that will be contained within!

  3. I had really hoped that this building would have more style and look more upscale. Unfortunately it’s rather drab with nothing unique that stands out. Maybe it will look better once other retail options move in. As another person commented, the Walmart on Georgia Ave fits into that neighborhood.

  4. I think it looks fine, but I’m ready for the Walmart and other retail to open now. Is there an ETA on when that will happen?

    • Latest ETA for Walmart is simply fall (Oct-Nov timeframe). They always said they would open the hiring center 3-4 months before the store opens and the hiring center opened at the beginning of July. And you can see that buildout of the Subway has started as well. Still no word just yet on whether the other leases have been finalized (besides Subway and Five Guys).

  5. I think it looks okay – I’m just happy that something urban and walkable was built there. If it anchored a new hub right on South Dakota and Riggs, that would be great. I think they really need to find a better way to walk to the metro, though. As the crow flies, it’s not far at all, but the way you have to walk takes much longer and the route is not very pedestrian friendly.
