Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Muriel Bowser. It might still be news to some that Bowser is a Riggs Park resident. She launched her campaign for mayor from her childhood home in nearby North Michigan Park. For residents on the Ward 5 side, you can often catch her father at ANC 5A meetings. Bowser already had some security during the campaign, but residents can probably expect to see more security detail as long as she lives in the neighborhood (and maybe that will help curb the uptick in burglaries we are seeing in the neighborhood). For residents on the Ward 4 side, you can look forward to electing a new councilmember in a special election next year.
Will having the mayor and her parents living in this area of the city help or hurt the current and future development of the area?
Not sure it will have an effect. If you have friends who live in Hillcrest, you can ask them if Mayor Gray’s presence made a big difference there. He’s been a vocal advocate of getting Skyland developed; we’ll see how long that takes. ETA: The 2 areas have similar demographics, though Hillcrest probably has higher median home value, but is less great with transit access. I’m thinking any development and how it’s welcomed or not will still ultimately come down to the numbers/demographics. And I suspect Bowser will be heavily focused on Walter Reed (just my guess, not based on any inside info). Not to mention she can always move out of the neighborhood at any moment.
